Whilst the company has a long-standing history of passive fire protection work, both in the industrial and commercial sectors, this discipline only forms a minor role in the business and generally only with existing clients, we no longer actively pursue work within this arena.


There are generally two types of fire, one is cellulosic and the other hydro carbon, the later is generally only found in a refinery/chemical plant situation, the former is associated with buildings, the two are quite distinct in the type of fire, both if allowed to burn will reach similar temperatures, however the hydro carbon fire reaches its ultimate heat very quickly, in some cases almost instantaneously.

The systems used for the protection of these fires are similar in application, however differ in their capabilities.


This terminology is distinct from ACTIVE FIRE PROTECTION in so much as the passive systems are generally applied coatings/seals and the like, items such as:

  • Structural Steel
  • Penetration Barriers, walls, roof spaces, floors, compartmentisation
  • Ceiling Barriers
  • Cable Protection


There are numerous products on the market which allow for the insulation protection required during a fire situation. Empire Contracting are approved applicators of the 

Cafco 300 a plaster/gypsum sprayed coating, mainly used in cellulosic fire applications

Fendolite II a cementitous based sprayed coating mainly used in hydro carbon fire applications

Grunau KBS Systems, these products can be used in either cellulosic or hydro carbon fire applications
